What’s the best way to celebrate Christmas? I’m sure you all can come with a slew of nauseatingly festive ideas—i.e. the oh-so popular 8-hour marathon of the Christmas Story. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the movie, but I’ve had “you’ll shoot your eye out” running in a continual loop in my head for 72 hours now, and I’m honestly very close to literally shooting my eye out. On a side note, I had my own little entertaining “Red Ryder” moment this Christmas—Santa decided to give me a brand new Ruger 10/22 rifle (unfortunately, without a compass in the stock). I was overjoyed with the generous gift, but let’s just say that my mother was a little less than thrilled. It made for a rather interesting and somewhat entertaining Christmas dinner.
Anyway, back to surfing: How does venturing alone into the wilds of Patagonia to hunt for an unknown but epic left-hander sound for an Xmas celebration? Fun, right? I definitely know what I’m doing next year.
Kepa Acero recently spent most of December trekking alone through Patagonia, where he discovered this unknown wave at the “end of the world.” Acero made a little self-shot film of his new discovery (posted below). Enjoy the video, and I hope you all are inspired to venture out into the unknown and do a bit of exploring. Happy Holidays everybody!
What’s the best way to travel on a river?
Is it via an old-time paddle wheeler? Or how about a Huck Finn-style log raft? Well, per this latest video, the best way (by far) to travel on a river is via surfboard.
Yep, this video was shot by Juan Hernandez down at the Uremea River in the Basque region of Spain. Surfer Hodei Collazo catches a few incoming waves or tidal bores (not sure which one), and actually rides for a quite a distance.
Here’s the message that was attached to the video:
En espanol: “Mi primer baño en el rio Urumea con una Pukas de 1978, he surfeado una de las olas mas largas de mi vida, una gran experiencia! Alguno surfeó más de 3 minutos!”
In good ol’ ingles: “My first session at Urumea river, I used an 1978 Pukas surfboard and get some of the longest waves of my life, a great experience. Somebody surfed more than 3 minutes!” — Hodei Collazo
Gracias por el video, Juan! Oh, and check out the old dude at 00:30. His look of surprise and utter confusion is absolutely priceless.
It’s been an interesting week in the surfing world: Adriano De Souzo won the Rip Curl Pro Portugal (and subsequently beat out Kelly Slater — no minor feat, indeed), oil continues to leak from the wrecked tanker in New Zealand, and pros Ralph Bruhwiler and Peter Devries scored epic overhead barrels near — of all places — Vancouver Island (check out the video here!).
Exciting stuff, right? Well, after browsing Surfer’s This Week in Review, I was able to track down some more entertaining surf news bits you. Check it out:
Well, let’s get the ball rolling with a little shark surfing, shall we? Last week, a Great White knocked Oregon surfer Doug Niblack off his board while he was surfing near Seaside. Somehow, while he was trying to get back to shore, he ended up on the shark’s back. He briefly “stood” on it for a moment, and then — justifiably — swam quickly back to shore. Here’s an animated video of the event. On a side note, the video kind of reminds me of the whole Charlie Sheen rampage news clip from Taiwan… minus the cocaine and cartoon noises, of course.
Oregon has to be a popular hang spot for sharks, because on Thursday another Oregonian (how do you pronounce that?) had a run in with a curious Great White. Unfortunately, for this surfer, he didn’t get to ride the supposed 10-to 15-foot shark… but in all honesty, I think he’s OK with that.
Yeah… I don’t really know why I picked this last one. I guess the thought of a surfing bear just kinda tickles me. Although on second thought, a surfing bear would be very terrifying. Honestly, we really don’t need any more critters out in the water that enjoy a casual mauling or two. Nope, thank you very much.
Anyway, enjoy!
Today was day 3 of the 2011 Rip Curl Pro Portugal at Peniche, and I had to upload this awesome new vid from the event. Bede Durbidge scored this perfect shack during heat 8 of round 10 of the contest, and actually beat out Aussie superhero Mick Fanning. Durbridge’s score was unbelievable: a perfect 10! He definitely earned it. Check it out:
Check out this new video from the twisted folks at Volcom:
This week’s episode features Andrew Doheny, Parker Coffin and Nate Tyler shredding a few waves in Western Australia.
Enjoy!
Hayley Gordon of the Surfinghandbook.com shot this sick video of two of her gal pals (Sara Taylor and Ornella Pellizzari) ripping it up at Trestles. The remarkable thing is that Lowers is practically empty during the entire session! Lucky ladies…
Anyway, enjoy the vid!
YouTube:
Surfin’ mice. Need I say more? I actually think one of ‘em gets barreled.
Surfing the Great Lakes. Iceberg dead ahead!
Surfing with flares. Um… yeah. Don’t really get the point, but hey, it looks kinda cool.

I guess the big theme of the week was nudity; some of said nudity was quite nice, the rest well… not so much.*
*I’ll give you a hint: old, naked French people. Enjoy! Or should I say, Bonne Chance!
